McCartney Riders Safe
All seven remaining Linda McCartney Foods riders safely finished in the 'Autobus' on the races biggest test so far, to complete the stage within the time limit as per team manager Sean Yates's instructions. "This is not our sort of stage, survival is the name of the day, and then we'll look to the next stage. I'm very happy everybody got through ok."
Two hard mountains passes made the day belong to the climbers and those seeking a high placing overall when the race reaches Milan on Sunday week.
Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola-Sidermec) stamped his authority on the Giro by winning the stage 1 minute 39 seconds ahead of the second placed rider Stefano Garzelli (Mercatone Uno-Albacom) and last year's champion Ivan Gotti (Team Polti) who finished 6th. National star Marco Pantani (Mercatone Uno-Albacom), who is using the race as a 'warm-up' for the forthcoming Tour de France, finished 26th, 6 minutes 54 seconds down on Casagrande. Casagrande now wears the coveted pink leader's jersey.
