David McKenzie of the Linda McCartney Foods Cycling Team has WON the 7th
Stage of the 83rd Giro d'Italia!
Not only that, the Australian rode alone for an incredible 164kms.
An epic win, the greatest ever by a McCartney rider, and one of the most
fantastic receptions seen at a Giro finish for a foreign rider.
"It's a dream come true for me," said Macca as he wiped away the tears on the
victory podium. "I've watched races like the Tour of Italy and the Tour de
France on TV in Melbourne since I was 8 or 9 years old. I couldn't even hope
to come to a race like this, but I've won a stage. It hasn't sunk in yet."
The closest that any rider got to the tough Aussie was Polti's Eddy Mazzoleni who tried in vain to catch the rider from Victoria. His maximum lead was 12 minutes but this was slowly eaten into by the chasing peloton to just 51 seconds before the line, no doubt eager to bring him back for yet another bunch sprint.
With just 20km to go Macca started to improve after a bad patch where his style became, not surprisingly, labored. He could no doubt smell the victory champagne! With just 4km to go Mazzoleni was caught after the Italian team's Lampre and Mobilvetta mounted a serious chase. This was far too late to catch the now confident vegetarian.
His arms held aloft the proud McCartney rider crossed the line to take a well deserved and hard worked win, with Press Officer John Deering greeting him with clenched fists wearing a Chelsea FC jersey, what a day for him, Chelsea won the Cup and Macca gets our greatest victory yet!
McKenzie Wakes Up as Toast of Italy
David McKenzie awoke in his hotel room overlooking the Adriatic this morning
and lay for a moment, blinking at the early morning sunlight. Could it really
be true? Had he taken Linda McCartney Foods' first victory in one of the
great tours? Was it possible that he had eluded his pursuers over a hundred
miles of undulating roads? His eyes gradually focused on that morning's copy
of the Gazzetta Dello Sport. The famous pink paper that initiated this race
nearly a hundred years ago had already been procured by his roommate, Matt
Stephens. The front cover woke David with a jolt, as he saw a colour portrait
of himself, flanked by two supermodels on yesterday's victory podium - it was
true. More...
