McCartney's Seek Further Glory
Danish Linda McCartney Foods rider Tayeb Braikia gave the team another top-ten placing in this epic race finishing 7th in the final bunch gallop to the line, placing 8th on the stage.
Czech Jan Svorda (Lampre-Daikin) won the sprint but was beaten to the win by the heroic Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano (Vitalicio Seguros) who attacked at the InterGiro sprint with just under 100km to go, and like McCartney's own hero Dave McKenzie nearly two weeks ago, he held of the chasing pack to take the victory by just 24 seconds.
British star Max Sciandri was once again showing the distinctive McCartney colours at the front after he was involved in a four man move. Unfortunately for him and his escapees the chase behind was too organised and they were caught on the finishing circuit in the beautiful city of Genoa.
Aussie team-mate Dave McKenzie was next to try his luck for the McCartney machine but the team were once again thwarted by the advancing peloton. Spaniard Gonzalez de Galdeano was not so unlucky, the win was his, and he even had time to celebrate with 500 metres to go!
On Friday the race enters France via the Alps to finish in Briancon with the brutal Col d'Izoard mountain pass standing in the riders way. Maybe then we will have a good idea who will win the first edition of this great race in the new millennium. Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola-Sidermec) keeps Italian flags flying for now, but anyone down to at least 7th place has a chance to grab overall glory, perhaps previous winners Gotti (Team Polti) or Tonkov (Mapei-Quick Step) will take their chance, only time will tell. |
