5th in the Worlds for Tayeb
Tayeb Braikia of the Linda McCartney Pro Cycling Team took a splendid 5th
place in a frenetic points race as the one of the best ever World Track
Championships drew to a close in Manchester.
The beautiful velodrome was full to capacity yet again for the last night of
racing, proving that cycling in the UK is not the curiosity minority sport
that many seem to paint it. Millions more were glued to the action on
Eurosport. The lucky people who managed to get tickets throughout the week
were treated to some fantastic racing in every session. Great Britain had a
brilliant week, with a first gold medal at the age of 39 for Yvonne McGregor
in the women's pursuit. Her friend and mentor Chris Boardman responded to the
outlawing of his 1996 world hour record, by breaking the newly restored mark
set by Eddy Merckx in 1972 - what a great way to draw the curtain on a
glittering career. Linda McCartney's new signing Bradley Wiggins was part of
the team pursuit team that turned their Olympic bronze into a world silver,
along with McCartney old boys Jonny Clay and Chris Newton. Olympic gold
medallist Jason Queally came back to a hero's welcome, and added a world
bronze to his tally.
On the last night, Tayeb stormed round the boards in a fantastic performance
in his Danish colours, and a new white helmet supplied by Giro especially for
the event. The McCartney rider actually completed the 40km race with a point
more than the winner, Juan Llaneras of Spain, but had to settle for 5th, as
Llaneras and three breakaway companions had audaciously stolen a lap's lead
on the rest of the field.
Men's Points Race:
1. Juan Llaneras Rosello (Spain) 19pts
2. Matthew Gilmore (Belgium) 18pts
3. Franz Stocher (Austria) 17pts
4. Juan Esteban Curuchet (Argentina) 16pts
5. Tayeb Braikia (Denmark) 20pts @ 1 Lap
There was a fine result for Bradley Wiggins's regular Madison partner Rob
Hayles, as he snatched a bronze medal for Britain in the individual pursuit.
Rob comfortably beat France's former world champion Francis Moreau to the
delight of a delirious last night crowd.
The whole week was a fantastic advertisement for British cycling, both on the
track and off, as the organisation was as slick, professional and
entertaining as any event on the planet.
The completion of events signals the end of a tremendous season for Linda
McCartney, but work goes on unabated to ensure an even better 2001. The
exciting riders already announced for next season have demonstrated the
team's intent to grow, as will the others that Sean Yates hopes to add over
the coming weeks. More news as it happens, as the Linda McCartney news
service continues to operate throughout the close season.
Everybody associated with the team would like to thank all of you that have
cheered us on, watched us on TV or written to us in 2000. We hope to repay
your support with some great victories in 2001.
