David McKenzie of the Linda McCartney Pro Cycling Team has been named
Australian Male Road Cyclist of the Year.
The Australian cycling federation's annual awards ceremony was held in
Melbourne on Friday night, and honoured David for his unbelievable 164km
break in this year's Giro d'Italia.
It was a glittering gala night at the brand new Vodafone Arena, Melbourne's
new indoor velodrome, which will also be a centrepiece for the Australian
Open tennis championships.
"It's a great thing to win, I feel really honoured," said Macca afterwards.
Henk Vogels and Australian Champion Jamie Drew, who have both enjoyed great
seasons at Mercury, were the other nominees. Macca was a popular winner,
being a Melbourne resident, and was delighted to pick up the beautiful trophy.
Meanwhile, in chillier climes, the Ghent six-day event came to an exciting
close last night. There was a link to the Australian awards ceremony, as
overall joint winners of the Australian Cyclist of the Year Scott McGrory and
Brett Aitken took second place overall behind the Belgian/Italian pairing of
Matthew Gilmore and Silvio Martinello. Gilmore, a Ghent local hero, is the
son of an Australian cycling legend himself, so the Aussies had a good night
all round.
New Linda McCartney signing Bradley Wiggins and Rob Hayles took 8th place, an
excellent result for the British pairing. Danish McCartney man Tayeb Braikia
was in 11th with his partner Luc de Duytsche.
Tayeb now faces a dash across Europe to the Zurich six-day, where he will
join a star-studded cast for the racing starting tonight. For the first time
ever, the event will be run with three-man teams instead of the usual
pairings, with Tayeb matched with his preferred partner, fellow Dane Jimmy
Madsen, and Swiss star Beat Zberg. Also in the line-up, Linda McCartney's
former Olympic Champion, the retiring Swiss superstar Pascal Richard.
