Linda McCartney - Jacob's Creek Line Up for 2001
The Linda McCartney - Jacob's Creek Cycling Team are proud to unveil the riders that will wear their colours in 2001:
Tayeb Braikia (DK)
The Danish sprinter landed a string of top ten placings in his first Giro
d'Italia for Linda McCartney in 2000. A six-day star in the winter
Iñigo Cuesta (E)
The vastly experienced Spanish powerhouse joins us from Once, where he has
been an invaluable lieutenant to Jalabert and Olano. Winner of the Tour of
the Basque Country in 1998
Juan Carlos Dominguez (E)
The talented Juan Carlos comes to us from Vitalicio Seguros, where he
dominated the tours of Asturias, Rioja and Aragon last year
Russell Downing (GB)
The young Englishman steps up to the top flight after successes with us in
the UK, and continuing his education in Italy
Ondrej Fadrny (CZ)
An exciting prospect from the Czech Republic, Ondrey is only 21 but has
already attracted a lot of attention in Italy
Marcel Gono (AUS)
The highly rated Australian/Slovak arrives from Credit Agricole, where his
strength has been admired by many
Sergei Lelekin (RU)
Russian powerhouse who caught Sean Yates' eye with some blistering Italian
performances in 2000
David McKenzie (AUS)
Nobody who saw Macca's 164km lone victory in the Giro d'Italia will ever
forget the Aussie's grit
Miguel Martin Perdiguero (E)
Our third Spanish import is one of the great characters in the bunch. He took
the GP Miguel Indurain in 2000
Marlon Perez (COL)
A young Colombian climber of immense promise, pinched from beneath the noses
of the top US teams. Also packs a sprint
Ciarán Power (IRL)
The first Irishman to ride a big tour since Roche and Kelly, Ciaran took 5th
in a field sprint in the Giro d'Italia
Mirko Puglioli
Mirko brought a real lift to the team when he guested at the end of 2000. A
welcome addition to the permanent line-up
Pete Rogers (AUS)
An Australian renowned for his incredible strength, Pete joins on the
personal recommendation of Neil Stephens
Mark Scanlon (IRL)
The 1998 World Junior Champion, the Irishman is as classy and tough as they
come. Great things in store
Max Sciandri (GB)
The soul of the team, the Anglo/Italian is still at the very top of his
sport. Check his brilliant victory in the Giro del Lazio
Matt Stephens (GB)
A string of good stage race results for the popular British rider made him a
certainty to retain his place on the team
John Tanner (GB)
Reigning British Champion for the past two years, John is determined to make
his mark in Europe
Bjørnar Vestøl (N)
Great wins at the Ronde van Nord Holland and Circuito Montanes are proof of
the Norwegian's power
Bradley Wiggins (GB)
The World Junior Pursuit Champion in 1998, and Olympic Team Pursuit bronze
medallist. The most talented Briton of his generation
"I think we've got just the right blend of experience and youth," said one of
the men who put the squad together, new joint manager Neil Stephens. "We've
got young riders like Bradley, Marlon Perez, Russ Downing, Mark Scanlon and
Ondrej Fadrny; then we've got some proper clout with Sciandri, Dominguez,
Cuesta and the others."
His partner Sean Yates added, "Our first consideration when we look at a
rider is his willingness to work for others and commit himself to the team.
We've got 19 guys here that are all ready to do exactly that."
The team features ten different nationalities, including seven from Britain
and Ireland, and three each from Australia and Spain.
