Bradley Wiggins signs for Linda McCartney
The Linda McCartney Pro Cycling Team are delighted to announce that Olympic
star Bradley Wiggins will be a member of their 2001 line-up.
Bradley first came to the public's attention two years ago when he became
Junior World Champion in the pursuit. However, it was his part as the
youngest rider in the Great Britain bronze medal quartet in Sydney's team
pursuit that brought him to the nation's TV screens.
"We've been tracking Bradley's progress for a long time," reported his new
team manager Sean Yates. "He has developed beautifully within the successful
Great Britain set-up. He's only 20, but he's matured well, and he has a
fantastic engine. I think he's ideally suited to international road racing."
Neil Stephens, the Aussie who will be partnering Sean at the Linda McCartney
helm next year, saw Bradley at first hand in the Olympic velodrome. "He's
lanky, but those long legs carry massive power. He listens to what his
coaches tell him and he has a quiet confidence I like. I think he's got a
fantastic career in front of him."
"Exciting times," grinned Bradley. "I'll be riding the World Track
Championships at Manchester, then some six-days on the track in November.
Then I'm looking forward to getting together with all the rest of the guys in
Toulouse."
It is on the indoor tracks of Europe in winter that Bradley has caught the
eye of the great Eddy Merckx, and also the best ever six-day rider Patrick
Sercu. Neither have any doubt that he will prove to be one of the great
riders of his generation.
Bradley's versatility is evident in the incredible tally of 12 national
titles he has already racked up. He took his first in 1995 as a novice track
rider, and has continually stacked them up ever since. His road skills were
honed over the course of the Pete Buckley junior series, which he also won.
Now he considers the cut and thrust of the Madison and the measured effort of
the pursuit his best events, but knows that his future lies out on the open
road.
Belgium has been particularly taken with Bradley, and his rides on the tracks
and roads of Flanders have already seen him the subject of newspaper articles
and TV features there.
