New Recruit on Song
Mark Scanlon, the former World Junior Champion who has just signed for the
Linda McCartney Pro Cycling Team, won the first stage of the Tour of Hokkaido
in Japan.
He carries the leader's jersey into stage 2 of the prestigious world ranking
stage race, leading a strong Irish squad.
Mark makes his Linda McCartney debut at the end of this month at the Circuit
Franco-Belge.
His future teammates are back in the thick of it at the top-ranked Giro del
Lazio today. This is the last race for many of the top Olympic contenders, so
we can safely assume there will be fireworks in Rome. Max Sciandri will be
looking to fine-tune his current excellent form and stay out of trouble in
his last race before flying to Sydney.
Matt De Canio's spell with the team has come to an untimely end, as he flew
home to America yesterday morning because of a family illness. We are sorry
to see him go, as he has been a fantastic asset to the team, a great guy to
have around and a good friend to all of us. He will be missed, but his
prospects look bright for 2001, and we wish him all the best.
Back on the subject of Sydney, fantastic news for British cycling this
morning, as brilliant trackman Jason Queally snatched a wonderful gold medal
in the 1000 metre time trial. The powerful Brit excelled himself, and takes
our first cycling gold since Chris Boardman's famous pursuit win in Barcelona
back in '92. Congratulations to Jason from everyone here at the Linda
McCartney Pro Cycling Team.
