Ciaran cruises into second overall
Ciaran Power's remarkably consistent Sun Tour in Victoria continues unabated,
as the Linda McCartney rider took 3rd on a stage yet again. That's three in
nine stages! His sprint finish behind Baden Cooke and Jeremy Hunt moved him
into a threatening 2nd place overall.
It was Baden Cooke's third stage win, and the other man in the headlines is
experienced Canadian Eric Wohlberg, who took the overall lead. He heads
Ciaran by 15 slender seconds.
There are six stages remaining, with Wohlberg's favourite discipline, the
time trial, lying in wait on Thursday. However, with Ciaran in rampant form,
and his Irish team continuing to pose problems on every stage, the Canadian
will need to be at his best to hang on to the leader's jersey all the way
through to next Sunday.
Stage 9: Shepparton Kermesse - 80km
1. B Cooke (Jayco) 1:49:12
2. J Hunt (Southern Grampians) @ 0.00
3. Ciaran Power (Latrobe City)
Overall:
1. E Wohlberg (Australia Post) 17.57.32
2. Ciaran Power (Latrobe City) @ 0.15
3. T Konecny (Active For Life)
In other racing, Linda McCartney team manager Sean Yates accompanied
Britain's top time trial rider Michael Hutchinson to victory in Sunday's
Redmon CC Gentleman's Time Trial. In this event, an old bloke has to stay
behind a younger man for the duration of the 18 miles, thus providing an
excellent opportunity for Sean to really enjoy an event. "I won it in 1985
and 1986 with Mick Ives sitting on my wheel," remembered Sean. "He was giving
me some right abuse all the way round. I was pleased to be able to be in his
spot this time! We broke the course record then, but today we went more than
a minute quicker."
Caterina Sciandri is back home with their new baby Leonardo. The little
fellow is lovely, but his mum will be spending a few days in bed recovering
after having a rough times of things. Dad is naturally very proud, as are
Anastasia and Lorenzo of their little brother.
On the sporting front, Max discovered that his crash in Sydney has left him
with a tiny fracture to the pelvis. Fluid is continually building up on the
injury, and he will have it syringed before leaving for Brittany and the
World Championships on Thursday. "I feel good, my legs are strong and it
hasn't stopped me training," said Max after a 190km training ride yesterday.
"If anything my back hurts more from the crash, but I'm determined to ride
this weekend. I think that this is one of the best ever World Championship
opportunities for me and I have good form. I hope the injury doesn't prevent
me doing well."
